superb 12-hour adaptation of Irwin Shaw's novel, chronicling the widely divergent values and paths of two brothers over 20 years. The compelling story of familial jealousy and heartbreak was an extraordinarily successful miniseries, garnering a record 23 Emmy nominations (it won four), and helped launch the career of Nick Nolte, who plays the free-spirited and unruly Tom Jordache. Two brothers couldn't be more opposite as they compete for the attention of their bitter, embattled immigrant parents. Rudy is hard at work at the family bakery trying to figure a way to pay for college, while Tom gets caught in pranks and fights. As Rudy prepares for graduation from high school, events begin to set each on a path of his own. It's the beginning of an unforgettable tale of two destinies that although quite different, can never be separated. It also spawned a weekly series, "Rich Man, Poor Man -- Book II" running during the 1976-77 television season with Strauss continuing his original role. William Smith garnered an Emmy nomination for his role as the evil Falconetti in Book II. Falconetti so dominates memories of the miniseries that its hard to believe he only appeared in 3 of the 12 one-hour episodes which originally ran in Feb/March of 1976. Falconetti was actually a more interesting character in Book II. His previously unrelenting tough guy was a manipulator in this scenes opposite Dimitra Arliss as his sister Marie. But it was his scenes with the powerful Estep [Peter Haskell] that saw a real change for William Smith. Despite the fact that Haskell was no physical match for Bill, Estep dominated Falconetti psychologically with his wealth and power. [Estep called Falconetti "Anthony" in a condescending tone] Bill did a notable job of shrinking psychically in the presence of Estep who used Falconetti for his own evil purposes.
